Introduction to Editorial Skills: Copy-Editing and Proofreading
For the very first time, the PTC is offering new editors the opportunity to learn proofreading and copy-editing skills, on-screen and on paper, in tandem. This is also the first PTC open course to offer PQB certification.
Introduction to Editorial Skills has been created in collaboration with some of the UK’s major publishing houses, to offer a comprehensive introduction to modern publishing processes and the key publishing skills of copy-editing and proofreading. It includes expert editorial advice and practice carrying out on-screen and paper-based editorial work in a range of different types of content, and for both print and digital output.
The course offers a unique three-step blended learning approach that combines self-study, a two-day classroom group course, and assessment:
Step 1: Pre-course pack download. Includes a self-study module providing a comprehensive introduction to: publishing workflows; copy-editing and proofreading on-screen and on hard copy; and BSI standard marks for proof correction, and exercises to complete.
Step 2: Two-day classroom course which includes feedback on the pre-course exercises, intensive workshops, further practice working on-screen and on paper, group work, and expert guidance from highly-experienced PTC tutors.
Step 3: PQB certified assessment by distance learning with a choice of assignments to be completed either on-screen or on paper.
Introduction to Editorial Skills is a springboard to Progress in Editorial Skills and many of the PTC’s other more specialised editorial courses, such as Editing in Word and Advanced Copy-Editing.

In addition, students wishing to start a career in publishing with formal training in editorial skills, as well as those who have to proofread and copy-edit as part of their job.
Those not working in book or journal publishing might find Editorial Skills for Business more suitable.
How does it work?
Step 1 The course begins two weeks before the classroom session with a course pack to download. This self-study module includes a comprehensive guide that introduces: publishing workflows; copy-editing and proofreading on-screen and on hard copy; the BSI standard marks for proof correction, plus sample exercises to put learning into practice straightaway. This forms the foundations of the next step …
Step 2 A two-day classroom course in London. This has intensive workshop sessions on copy-editing and proofreading, and provides:
• further practice working on a wide range of content and publishing media
• group work and the chance to network and learn from peers
• model answers and expert guidance from one of the PTC’s highly-experienced tutors
• extensive course notes and further exercises to take away for future reference, essential for the final step
Step 3 PQB certified assessment by distance learning. There is a choice of assignments that offers the option of assessment in exactly the format, or formats, most relevant to the individual’s working practice, be that editing on-screen in a Word template and proofreading in PDF comments, or copy-editing and proofreading on paper. Grading and constructive one-to-one feedback is offered from an expert tutor. The assessment is to be submitted within two weeks of completion of the classroom training and is returned with a course graded certificate of achievement.
