Getting into Grammar
This is a course for people who speak English fluently and have a good grasp of how the language works, but are unsure of the many and varied rules of English grammar. It will help you build a firm foundation of grammatical awareness, giving you the tools you need to identify, discuss and correct poor grammar and punctuation.

At the end of this course you should be able to:
- demonstrate a clear grasp of grammatical terms
- understand how sentences work
- use punctuation effectively
- show an awareness of some common pitfalls.
Who will benefit from this course?
Anyone who uses words for internal or external correspondence, in publicity material or in an editorial context. Getting into Grammar is particularly suitable for those needing an introduction to current English grammatical terms and key concepts, as well as the basic principles of punctuation. For those who are already familiar with the basic concepts and current terminology we recommend Grappling with Grammar.

- The building blocks – word, phrase, clause, sentence
- Word classes – old and new terms
- Verbs
- Key elements in sentences: grammatical functions
- Key relationship – subject and verb
- Clauses and sentence types: simple, compound, complex
- It’s or its? – the use and abuse of apostrophes
- How to use commas, semicolons, colons and dashes
- Some personal pronoun problems.
Note that most of our short courses can also be run as in-company events.
