Understanding Book Production

This is an excellent all round introduction to the different stages involved in the production and manufacturing of a book. It is an essential course for anyone who needs to understand how a book is made. Each part of the production workflow is covered including colour repro, the basics of printing and binding, the different cover and jacket finishes, paper, packing and shipping. Illustrated with visuals and physical samples throughout – you will see what a printing plate looks like, what the inks are like in their raw state and get to feel and compare different paper types. You will also cover the terminology used in book specifications and discuss the main factors which affect manufacturing prices and schedule. We also take a look at some of the things that can go wrong along the way. Whatever your role in publishing, knowing how your books are produced will help your overall understanding of the publishing process.
