Web accessibility seminar
Many thanks to Gordon Plant, tutor on our course in Best Practice in Web Accessibility, and Henny Swan, Senior Web Accessibility Consultant at the RNIB, who delivered a one-hour seminar on accessibility issues at the London Book Fair on 18 April.
The event was well attended, with some interesting contributions from the audience towards the end. Both Gordon and Henny focused on common-sense steps that are easily within the reach of anyone responsible for their organisation’s website, whether or not they have any technical expertise.
In particular, Gordon talked about how making a website accessible to those with visual or other impairments also tends to have the effect of making it more user-friendly to those without such impairments.
Similarly, he emphasised the importance of writing for the medium and catering for the majority of online readers, who tend to skim rather than read through large chunks of text in detail.
