Do you publish documents written by someone else? Do you use photographs or images created elsewhere? Do you let other organisations use your content in their publications?

If you answer yes to any of these, then you need to know how copyright works.

Taking a commonsense, non-legalistic approach, this course is for people working on all kinds of publications. It gives a broad introduction to the law, describes accepted industry practices, outlines the basics of publishing agreements, and provides tips and guidance on real-life situations.

After this course, you will:

  • have a grounding in the principles of copyright law
  • understand the basic publishing agreements and contracts
  • be able to apply this knowledge in real-life situations
  • know when to seek expert advice.

Programme

  • What is copyright?
    • Definitions and relevant legislation
  • Can I use this anyway?
    • Fair dealing
    • Public domain
  • Other rights of the author
    • Economic
    • Moral

Who will benefit from this course?
Anyone, outside of mainstream publishing, who works with text written by others, uses photographs or artworks created elsewhere, or creates content for others to use.

Note: If you’re involved in publishing books or journals, this course will not be suitable for you. Instead, you should consider attending Staying Within the Law or Publishing Contracts.
