Although being able to speak English means that we already know a great deal about how the language works, much of our knowledge is unconscious. This course will help you build a firm foundation of grammatical awareness, giving you the tools you need to identify, discuss and correct poor grammar and punctuation.

The perfect introduction, Getting into Grammar will give you:

  • a clear grasp of grammatical terms
  • an understanding of how sentences work
  • the knowledge to use punctuation effectively
  • an awareness of some common pitfalls.

Programme

  • The building blocks - word, phrase, clause, sentence
  • Word classes - old and new terms
  • Verbs
  • Key elements in sentences: grammatical functions
  • Key relationship - subject and verb
  • Clauses and sentence types: simple, compound, complex
  • It's or its? - the use and abuse of apostrophes
  • How to use commas, semicolons, colons and dashes
  • Some personal pronoun problems

Who will benefit from this course?
Anyone who uses words - for internal or external correspondence, in publicity material or in an editorial context. Getting into Grammar is particularly suitable for those needing an introduction to current grammatical terms and key concepts, as well as the basic principles of punctuation. For those who are already familiar with the basic concepts and current terminology we recommend Grappling with Grammar. It provides guidance and practice in specific problem areas as well as helping to consolidate punctuation skills.

Your tutor
Getting into Grammar and Grappling with Grammar are run by Andrew Steeds. After a spell in teaching and education research, Andrew worked as a publisher in three of the major UK educational publishing companies before going freelance in 1992. He now runs Simply Put, a company that offers writing, project management and consultancy to organisations that want to communicate more effectively with the full range of their readers.

Note that most of our open courses can also be run as in company events.
