This is a course for people who speak English fluently and have a good grasp of how the language works, but are unsure of the many and varied rules of English grammar. It will help you build a firm foundation of grammatical awareness, giving you the tools you need to identify, discuss and correct poor grammar and punctuation. This is a mid-level course that assumes a good working knowledge of the basics of grammar.

Who will benefit from this course?

Anyone who uses words for internal or external correspondence, in publicity material or in an editorial context. Getting into Grammar is particularly suitable for those needing an introduction to current English grammatical terms and key concepts, as well as the basic principles of punctuation. For those who are already familiar with the basic concepts and current terminology we recommend Grappling with Grammar.


Your tutor

Getting into Grammar and Grappling with Grammar are run by Andrew Steeds. After a spell in teaching and education research, Andrew worked as a publisher in three of the major UK educational publishing companies before going freelance in 1992. He now runs Simply Put, a company that offers writing, project management and consultancy to organisations that want to communicate more effectively with their readers.
