This course is all about understanding the impact of different software on digital files. You’ll get an in-depth view of digital workflow, learn how to troubleshoot problems and how to specify requirements for freelance copy-editors and designers.


You’ll learn about image creation, page layout and pre-press files and be better able to manage the complex flow of files and responsibilities. Using the latest software, you’ll learn:

 

  • how electronic manuscripts affect the design and typography of text in QuarkXPress or InDesign
  • how images are manipulated in Photoshop to ensure they are correctly presented in the page layout software
  • how to check page layout files from designers.

 

Practical examples will be used to illustrate common problems and their solutions.

    • Authors’ common errors and how to correct them

    • Styles and formatting
    • Specifying author’s delivery of electronic files
    • Specifying and carrying out copy-editing
  • Images: Adobe Photoshop
    • Resolution for colour and black and white images
    • Colour modes and why and when to select them
    • File formats what they mean, what to avoid and when to use which format
    • Changing size of images
    • Specifying image requirements
    • Creating simple clipping paths
  • Page layout: QuarkXPress/InDesign
    • How page layout software imports and works with (a) text and (b) images
    • Fonts in page layout files
    • Colour in images created in page layout programmes
    • Checking received files
    • Collect for output and reports
    • Pre-flighting and converting to PDF
  • Pre-press: Adobe Acrobat
    • Checking PDF files
    • Amending PDF files
    • Using PDF files for proofing
    • Using Word 2003 for proofing

 

Your tutor
Sally Hughes is a freelance trainer and consultant who specialises in DTP applications, typography and document design. She works with both Mac and PC platforms and has authored a report on the use of IT in editorial practice. Sally also teaches on the PTC’s InDesign and Acrobat courses, as well as being a lecturer in publishing at Oxford Brookes University.
