Managing Digital Projects

Digital projects are often challenging and never typical – they can vary in length, complexity and scope. Not only do digital project managers have to deal with mixed teams, all with different roles and responsibilities, but they also have to manage tight budgets and often tighter deadlines. The fluidity of the digital landscape and managing the expectations of others adds even more layers of difficulty to the task.

This course will stimulate learning on the most modern and exciting digital project management methods and will provide you with the skills you need to manage these projects using the very latest technologies. Digital publishing allows for continuous adjustment in response to feedback, using tools such as Agile Methods, which is a very different process from traditional print publishing.

In two days, this course will ensure that you:

  • understand the difference between managing print and digital projects
  • deliver fit-for-purpose digital projects within required time scales and budget, even if specifications and budgets change
  • manage complex projects
  • focus on iterative project management techniques and Agile methodology
  • deal with inputs from multiple stakeholders
  • select suppliers and put together teams that can deliver digital projects.

Learning to manage digital projects, however, is a never-ending challenge. Because many of these ideas may be new to delegates, this course offers follow-up coaching by email.

Programme

Day One

  • Differences between digital and print publishing projects
    • The nature of the medium – software is by its very nature changeable and requires different management methods
    • Mobile and internet publishing are relatively immature media – team structures, best practices and business models are still being developed
  • Approaches to managing digital projects
    • An iterative model, in which small amounts of functionality are delivered to the customer in a short space of time is far more effective model for the management of digital projects than a traditional approach
    • Benefits of an iterative method – it easily incorporates technological and business changes and user feedback can be included

Day Two

  • Managing a digital project
    • An effective project management framework for management and delivery of digital projects
    • The roles and calendar of meetings which the framework recommends
    • Case study: hands-on experience of using the framework
  • Soft skills
    • Why managing digital projects would be impossible without an appreciation of human communication skills
    • Why emotional conflicts arise in the progress of a digital project and some approaches which might help to diffuse them
    • Practical series of questions and exercises which allow members of an organisation to get a better understanding of where they are in relation to the process and so identify points where conflicts might arise.
