Gillian Clarke

Gillian Clarke began her publishing career working in-house as an editorial secretary/assistant to the company's medical editor. She progressed to proofreading and copy-editing mostly professional-level medical books and some technical books. Having no medical qualifications, she relied heavily on specialist reference books and more experienced colleagues – and on the very thorough training given by her boss.

Gillian moved into law publishing, from where she went freelance. As a freelancer, she has worked on publications ranging from very large multi-author medical tomes, through medium-sized publications on popular medicine and guidance for carers, to small booklets, brochures and leaflets. She is the senior author of the PTC's popular Basic Proofreading by Distance Learning.

Gillian is a founder member of the Society for Editors and Proofreaders, for whom she teaches proofreading, having set up their original training scheme. She is currently the Society's Publications Director.
