Anne Waddingham

Anne Waddingham trades as WordMedic ('Making words better') and has worked in STM publishing for over 30 years. She specialises in tutoring, on-screen editing and project management. She authored the on-screen editing chapter in the fourth edition of Butcher's Copy-editing (CUP, 2006) and contributed to New Hart's Rules (OUP, 2005). She has a Licentiateship in Editorial Skills from the City & Guilds Institute.

Anne's publishing career began in 1975 in tertiary journals, before she shifted to scientific, technical and medical books as a desk editor with Butterworths Scientific, moving up the tiers to become Editorial and Production Manager. Anne started her own business in 1991, trading as WordMedic, specialising in editorial services, training and consultancy. Her expertise lies in on-screen and online editing and proofreading of printed and digital product, from popular to academic, in project management and in teaching those skills to others. Anne is a Registered and Advanced member of the Society for Editors and Proofreaders, for whom she also teach courses. She has a Licentiateship in Editorial Skills from the City & Guilds Institute.

Anne's freelance career has involved working for a wide range of clients including the BMJ Publishing Group, The Open University and Pearson, among many others. Anne has been invited to develop and teach in-house courses at many UK academic and educational publishing houses, government bodies and in various international institutions, including the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control in Stockholm, the United Nations in Vienna, the Food and Agriculture Organisation in Rome and NATO in The Hague. Anne has also been an Assessor for the Publishing Qualifications Board, assessing candidates for the National Vocational Qualifications in Book Editing, and she was the first Chair of the committee that developed and piloted the SfEP's Accreditation scheme.

Anne wrote the on-screen editing chapter in the fourth edition of Butcher's Copy-editing (CUP 2006), contributed to New Hart's Rules (OUP 2005) and authored the SfEP guide Editor and Client: building a professional relationship (2008).
